The Jaya Mural Clean-Up and Re-Coating was completed.
In 1975, the Citywide Mural Project paid a women artists’ collective to depict life in the unique canal community. Their work was the Jaya Mural, which means “non-violent victory” in Sanskrit.
The mid 70’s were a time of developmental turmoil in the Canals with speculators and developers. Real estate values rose from the teens, to as high as $25,000. One-third of the canal properties were vacant.
“The mural is essentially a picture of struggles of people who were living here experienced while trying to preserve the Canal community.” Mandy Peck. Each person depicted was a Canal resident. It is a work of art, a visual chronicle of historical development, and a statement of protest.
